Well i ordered some Thorichthys Passiones last week form Rapps and they were getting there butts kicked in my 125 so yesterday I did something that I don't normally do. I took the Passiones out of the 125 and put them in my 90 gallon tank with my Gymnogeophagus Labiatus and Balzani. What are the chances of this combination working out over the long run? Right now its fairly mellow but i worry the Passiones will get too aggresive in this mix. What do you guys think? Temperature wise this is a pretty good set up. The tank is at 72 right now and the Passiones seem to like it.

Definatly..

I have a tank with both SA's, CA's, African, asian and a red belly piranha, with no trouble what so ever. All adult specimens, except the Piranha which is 4".

But ofcourse, you could get unlucky, and have fish kill each other, which can pretty much happen to anyone and any types of fish. Never happened to me though, even though this mix is probably the "worst" you can possibly get in any tank.

Pasiones are supposed to be pretty peckish for a Thorichthys, so that might be a bit much for the Gymno's when they are larger. For now it probably won't be an issue though. Probably.

You are mixing a Piranha with Cichlids???

hope it turns out well for you. especially since I have some cryptoheros in with my balzanii. my tank turned into a CA and SA tank much to my dismay as well. keep us updated on the combo. if nothing else, it should be a nice looking combo.

Ive mixed sa with ca for a few years now and noticed that the ca usually bully the sa around, but they manage. (depends on what the fish is too of course) But Ive also noticed that the sa cichlids seem to never get sick and the the ca cichlids seem to catch diseases that are pretty rare. Many of my fish are F0 and I think the sa cichlids carry diseases that affect the ca cichlids more. Right now Im fighting hemorhagic septicemia. The southies are fine but the centrals are catching it.

Well after watching this set up for a few days I'm not convinced its going to work over the long run. The Balzani don't seem to be doing well in this arrangement. I really don't see any serious aggression issues but they just don't seem happy. I think I'm going to take the Passiones out and put them in a 55 gallon tank this weekend. I think it will work out better for all the fish involved.

Good decision.

Even if they get along over the long run, I don't know if it will be a tank you want to watch all day. G. labiatus and G. balzani plus some Uruguay tetras or cory should make a beautiful tank.
