It doesn't look quite that big, but I'm 95% sure it's a male. There's no black in the dorsal or ventral fins and you can just about make out the white point in the vent.

Yep, sexually mature females do get black, but when they are still juveniles it can be difficult to tell the difference. I found with mine that only females carry any black in the fins, and the first fins to show are the ventrals and the front of the dorsal. Males never had this, and they show the silver/while genital papilla very early.

Both my males are around the 13" mark and so far haven't shown signs of developing much of a hump (see avatar). They haven't bred yet, and maybe the surge of hormones is needed for the transformation, some fish will breed at a really small size hence the early hump? It could also be down to genetics, some 'types' may be more 'humpy' than others ! I've also seen pics of females with humps in this species.

hmm I dunno I ended up losing all of mine but I had two males that literally had nuchal humps formed at an inch and a half all the way up to 2.5". I was really looking forward to them getting big but it didn't happen. Trimacs are buttheads :(
