I never liked buying replacement filters (with carbon) for my power filter....

So I decided to take out the carbon and add some bio filtration via spongies/scourging pads.

I cut the filter, took out the carbon, and added a scourging pad as you can see in the pics. You may have to sign in to see pics.

I hope this will be end up being a better setup as I never changed out the replacement filters anyway :nilly:

did you remove all of the old media?

if not.. good... and yeah... should work fine..

if yes.. keep an eye on your parameters since you just removed a LOT of your BB... after your tank possiably finnishes recycling it should work fine

I did leave the media....although the only media was blue filter part (see in the 1st pic). It had carbon in so I cut it and placed a scourging pad in it. The lack of media is the main reason that I wanted to add more.
It is just a cheap walmart brand power filter, but it is improved now :)

the idea is good, yeah. but you could make it better by making it to where there is no bypass of the new sponges. using something like pillow filling in the cavities could work better IMO

like pillow filling
Did just that, with my aqua-techs. It seemed to let loose strands of the polyfill out into the tank. After awhile, I even had to pull the filter apart to get at some of those strands off of my impeller shaft. Tried the quilt batting, matt like, not loose and it shed less material. Finally found some gallon size, paint strainer bags at lowes. Nothing gets out of those fine mesh bags.
BTW: these are pretty good filters for the $$$$ They move alot of water, large filter compartments, but no ego boost using low end stuff.
