Modifying an Eheim Gravel Vacuum?

I have the battery powered Eheim Gravel vac and it works pretty well at getting the big pieces of waste out of the tank. But it doesn't do a very good job of getting the fine particles out of the water.

If I put a fine filter sponge to fit into the removable filter section of the vac, will it make a difference? Will it mess up the gravel vac?

Sounds like you need additional mechanical filtration? What is your tank setup?

For fine detritus (from 2" gold fishes i got in my massive tank atm, i just get a 1/4 vinyl hose (tbh a big airline will do), splinter it so its stiff, and just suck on an end and you got flow. My 1/4" gets into the nooks and crannies pretty well, gets the sand sometimes too if im not careful.
