so this stand i plan on changing. it was a 20'' high 2x2'' 1/8th wall steel tube stand, little too short for my liking.

i cut it at 10'' on all 4 posts, and have some larger steel tubing, same wall thickness but big enough to slip over the existing post coming in a couple days. i just plan on welding the sleeves over top to raise the stand to an overall 31'' roughly.

i have on order a perfecto 180 gallon aquarium which is my first braced aquarium, and was wondering if any other supports need to be added, or if plywood needs to be in there too.

another question is the warranty thing. with one of there stands i geuss its a 5 year warranty (ive heard but not found on marinelands website) or without one of there stands is 90 days. $300 for the basic metal stand.

ideas? concerns? thanks

hello; First the pictured stand with the cut off legs should have some sort of additional bracing. There are various ways to do this with a lower level platform perhaps being the most practical. This way the stand is braced and you have a second shelf which is very handy.
As far as a warranty goes, with the cuts you have done and home welding, it is unlikely any warranty will be honored.

no not on this stand, i mean a new stand (warranty wise).

this stand does have a bottom, the matching peice to the one i cut. i just sliced it in half.

the question was, fix this (add any addtional support if needed) or buy a new one when i pick up the aquarium.

Hello; Much more clear. Seems like a money or personal preference decision. If the money is not an issue, it may give some peace of mind to have a factory stand with a warranty and some expectation of acceptable strength.
If money is tight or you like to DIY, then a homemade stand can be a big satisfaction. Should you trust your welding skills, it may be wise to test the stand with a load considerably more than the maximum possible with a full tank setup.
On a different thought. I am curious as to why you decided to cut the legs of the stand pictured in place of adding some length to it or building some sort of raised base?

Really depends on if you want the warranty or not. Your stand looks good build it up a little and go for it. Me I would build my own stand. But allot of people would rather buy one. The company just wants to make sure it's really well supported. Weld that together well and then add some strut support at the corners if needed
