am I alowed to pic up and check out reptiles and such in the desert without getting in trouble,is it just protected things like the tortoises that I cant mess with?

There are about 250 fish and game wardens in California - the odds of you running into one while illegally herping are slim.

There is nothing wrong with catching and releasing an animal without actually taking it out of it's environment - even if you were caught doing it (assuming it's not an endangered species) you'd just be told not to do it again.

If you do take them out of their habitat, it's a different story.

Stay away from the rattlesnakes out there, mojave green's will drop you dead in 30 minutes flat if you get tagged.

A good way to go herping is to head out late at night and just watch the roads with your brights on, all sorts of stuff can be found on the asphalt at night.

yeah because we went at sun up this morning and found squat lmao.I mean we travled miles and miles off road and found diddly squat.I dont plan on taking anything, but would sure like to find them and study.THough not seeing anything worth noting,it was a hell of an adventure, save for another day,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so night is best then,I figured they would need to come out in morning to bask.

If your not taking anything and not causing harm to it and your just interested in looking at them I say screw the wardens.
Knowledge is power.
