Ok as a huge fan of Cryptozoology I really want a Mokele Mbembe bichir. I doubt my current tank (60g) will be big enough for one but I am going to be getting a much bigger one (200-300 depending on space and funds) fairly soon. Can anyone give me some specs or point me in the direction of a working link to some specs on tank info such as ph, temp, hard/soft water, fod sources, type of subsrate, etc etc? Thank you for your time and patience

Mokelembembe are actually one of the smallest polypterus species and depending on the dimensions of the 60 could stay in there for life. I would suggest sand substrate (black specifically), because it usually enhances their colors if you use the right substrate and they can easily choke and die if they accidentally eat gravel if they are on gravel substrate. Their food would be mainly bloodworms, brineshrimp, pellets, when they were small and when they grow larger they can still be fed those and also you can add tilapia, silversides, catfish, and many more things. The temp they usually like around high 70's and low 80's. Actually you might be better off keeping it in the 60 for a while, because since some mokes have very shy personalities they may not eat for a while and in a large 200g-300g tank they could easily miss out on eating if the tank mates get to the food quicker than the moke.

Np so do you already have a moke? or are you just looking into getting one?

Looking into getting one. I would never get a fish before I knew all the ins and outs of care especially the basics like tank size and ph. My Gf wanted to get a red tailed catfish for our 60g and I told her she was insane.
An after looking at all you posted. It looks like a moke would be perfect for all the ideas I had for the current tank.

Cool well when you're ready to get one I highly recommend Jurassic Aquatics. They actually have some in stock right now. So is this your first bichir or have you had some before?

First bichir. Always wanted one. I love how they look. Add the name in and the fact that I have over 10 books on tue cryptid mokele mbembe and seeing some pics of the fish and I was hooked.

Also. Do they like lots of hiding caves and/or dense plants? Since you said some are kinda shy I would assume so but well you kbow what they say abiut assuming something. Are there anything (other than the obvious small fishes unless of course they are meant to supplimate its diet) to make sure to stay away from?

I would put something in there for it to hide in because IME mokes are pretty shy. And are you taking about fish that will be eaten or tank mates?
