I have a nice looking top that goes on my tank but I always have to keep the lid up because it gets very moldy underneath. It is made of wood. Does anyone have this problem? Will a small fan like a computer fan help? I'm surprised this didn't come up in any searches.

^ +1 thats what i did ... i have yet had no problem and its stress free... that stuff can can! for reals lol

If I paint it with something won't it eventually leech into the water if it's constantly wet?

I have used "Killz" in the past and liked it. WHy would it consistently be wet? That is the bigger issue than the mold. Do you have tops (lids) for the tank? Yes, a fan would help considerably.

I do have lids but with the hob filters and air stone there is always moisture under there

I had this similar issue with wood lids I didn't seal and I just cleaned the mold on a regular basis with water. However if I were to keep those lids I would have eventually put some sort of sealant on them. I understand the moisture but they aren't physically in the water so I don't see it leeching anything into the water. Some sort of water proof sealant maybe.

Drill a hole in the back and install a computer fan to keep it drier in there. Or do what they said above.
