I have an enclosed plywood hood on my tank, plainted white, and bubblers on both corners that splash onto the hood. This plus the humidity from evaporation make it very wet under the hood. This is on a new tank. I have since opened up the back to let some air in, but already quite a bit of black mold has grown on the inside of the hood, and in some places theres actually some fuzzy stuff visible. :irked: Not only gross but unhealthy! I cleaned it all off last night, but I don’t want it to come back.. removing the hood back will help, but any other suggestions?

Dry it off. Sand and paint both sides. If both sides are painted, clean with a bleach/water solution. Avoid getting into tank. I finally got rid of my wood hood when it got dry rot.

^ all that but use gloss/hi gloss paint (like the kind you use in the kitchen/bathroom/kids room cuz it wipes clean and is more water resistant..

i had a wood hood on my tank from when i was like 4 till i was in highschool

hmm thanks for the tips. I just cleaned it all out after a weekend away - removing the backing seems to have helped a lot. I am going to repaint it (thanks for the info Chester) and hope!

no prob... my tank was a lil 10gallon with a handful of neons and a few starwars figures.. not a whole lot of splashing... you could paint a layer of silicone on it just to give it an ultra seal...
