mollies and salt water

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've heard of people aclimating them to SW, but I don't know if they are any better off than in FW. I think Brackish is probably the best for mollies - somrthing in between. It would be an interesting experiment though!

i would expect it would kill them, would it not? they surely wouldnt last long would they?
Mollies can tolerate FW, BW and SW. No, the high salinity level will not kill them. I have not tried the salinity level yet as a factor of productivity rate so I cannot answer directly that SW will help them produce faster than FW although in theory, it could be the same with FW.

i;ve heard they prefer brackish, so they don't seem to be salt intolerant.

go with what Lupin says lol

Mollys are normally brackish to marine fish, few people realize that. You have to use marine salt though, not regular salt. I've got super hard liquid rock water and mine do great in that. The reason people add marine salt is more or less to harden their water. If your water is super hard then Mollys should do fine in it. GH over 300 and kh over 12 or so.

I've kept them in salt tanks, used them to "Cycle" it. Never seen them breed in it though. Some said brackish. I think thats closer to what they want.

i had some black mollies in my brackish tank till my ceylon puffer got big enough to smash and eat them now there gone they did well in my 1.014 salinity no nothing about salt i no that brackish is there most nature invorment so seems like that would be the best for them to breed in

I cannot comment on the brackish or saltwater conditions but I have had mollies alot in my community freshwater tanks and they have always bred. I can't say if this is optimum conditions but it has always worked for me. Mind you donot forget that mollies are not maternal in that sense and the fry are fair game as food once they are born. If you intend to actually breed these guys you need to set up the tank for that purpose or get ready to catch them.
good luck.
