the LFS by ours has a few of them in stock... are they reef safe. google says most cowries are omnivorous, so they can prey on corals. does anyone have them in thier tanks. i dont have many corals, but i like the ones i have so i thought id ask before i buy and they eat them.

i have had a bit of a hair algae bloom in the past week... the tank had been neglected somewhat, as the puffer had been in QT after a hogfish i was given showed signs of whitespot, and then died. so i want something to help me get back on track with my gardening.

ollie (the Green Spotted Puffer) is back in the tank now so its all good. i dont think he would bother the cowries. i have 3-4 hitchhiker nassarius* snails in there, starfish, and abalones. he hasnt bothered any of them yet, or my corals. so they would be good for a while (he is a puffer after all). and if/when he did decide to take a bite, they are only cheap. are they worth a shot?

would he mess with crabs?

a sally lightfoot or two would annihilate that hair alge..

turbo or astrea snails would do the same

i have no experience with cowries of any sort

had a red leg hemit crab... havent seen it in about a month... my guess is its toast.

well anyway i went to the lfs after work... and left the shop with 1 money cowrie. also left with a green star polyp frag.
i paid nothing for them :headbang2so i cant complain... will deffo keep an eye on the cowrie though.

since no one seems to have much to say about them, i'll be the guinea pig this time... i'll report back with my findings... eventually. there are only 2-3 pieces of information from google. 99% of info is jewelry related.

and as for the crab. im limited when it comes to marine stock. not many pet shops near me sell any. i cant drive so im limited to to shops on a bus route, or if i can get a lift off some one to BAS (the big LFS) about an hour from me.

update...

had to re-frag the star polyps. the LR they where on was aiptaisa ridden, they where detached at one end so i thought i may as well try. cut the good bits off and superglued them to a small piece of LR. in the middle of the tank in moderate flow. so lets see how they do...

i hope i did it right :nilly:
