Hey everyone. The wife wants to get back into keeping lizards (shes done it for over 8 years). Her birthday is comming up, and my uncle has offerd me his old 90gal aquarium 48x18x24 to setup a lizard tank. So my question is: if I were to buy the wife a baby savannah monitor, how long could it stay in the 90gal? I know its not a permanent home, just a starter till he gets bigger, and im not going to pass up a free tank lol the wife also still has all her old reptile equipment at her parents house.

Aquariums and monitors don't mix well. Just set up its permanent enclosure and throw it in. You can't give a monitor too much space, and even a newborn will do just great in an 8'x4'x4' cage.

That would last around 2 months ish depending on the amount you feed the monitor, as was stated though you still shouldn't keep most monitors in an aquarium.

7 to 8 months you can keep them in an aquarium just fine just make sure the size is right i used to own many monitors including niles and argus

x2.

Why not go for something smaller like a Timor or Ackie Monitor?

I disagree on the Timor monitor since they tend to be skittish & will need a larger enclosure in proportion to their body size in order to make them feel secure.

Rule of thumb for lizard cages is 1.5 times length by 3 times length. A standard 90 being 18" wide gives you till the sav is 12". Properly heated and fed, I give it a month. Any reason you're looking at monitors to temporarily live in the tank? There are a couple great lizard species that could spend their whole lives in a 90.

We both like the looks of a monitor plus the size. She doesnt want any small lizards anymore. I was looking online the other day about building my own enclosure, which is what I willprobably do. I can build one in a couple hours for pretty cheap. Would not. 6x4x4 work? Im not sure I have a 8 foot space to use because of all the fish tanks lol

Which species do you want to get? Ackies can get to be a bit over 24" long, so I wouldn't consider them to be small; they're more of a medium-sized lizard. 6'x4'x4' will not work for an adult savannah monitor although that would be fine for a small colony of ackies.

8x4x4 is the bare minimum for a Sav. And by bare minimum, I am saying it is the equivalent of keeping an Arapaima in a 10' circular tank.
