Hey guys, sup?
Been a while since I posted.
Anyways, I recently moved to California and now I have room for some large enclosures.

I've been thinking about getting either an Argus or a Black throat monitor next month.
The plan is to raise it up in a galvanized steel stock tank, and the build an 8x4x4' out of MDF. Top soil for substrate, and a concrete mixing pan as a water dish.

Just wondering if this sounds good to you guys, and if any other argus/black throat monitor keepers can chime in.

Also: I know these monitors don't always tame down, which is fine with me as they make great display animals and I like watching my reptiles more than handling them.
 
sounds ok but if i was you i would get a black and white tegu males grow 5' females 3-4' i have a 2.5' female and shes my fav of all my large lizards and monitors they have amazing coloureation and i would well recomend one also they make great display lizards
 
I do like B&W tegus, I'm also considering one of them. Baby Argentines won't be available until August probably though.

Also, I was going to ask in my first post; anyone know where/when ackies will be available? I'm having a hard time finding any other than adult breeding groups.
 
I've got a female black throated monitor 32" this far! She is way tame now... I rescued her at about 11" malnutritioned. She is out growing her 4' terrarium quickly. I have a huge enclosure outdoors for the summer. I always remover from the tank when feeding. She goes in the tub twice a week for 1-2 hours. She gets eggs sunny side up with ground turkey or grilled chicken with calcium seasoning. Hasn't bit yet. They can become fatties so becareful! Good luck!
 
The stock tank grow out will have plexi or lexan covering it and a screen portion where the light(s) will rest.
 
8x4x4 wont be big enough for a blackthroat. Mine was 6 feet and 33 pounds at 3yrs of age. i built a cage 8l x 4w x4t and it looked like it was cramping him big time. i would got 8l x 8w x 4t. blackthroats love to dig burrows so give your substrate some depth. blackthroats also love the heat! mine would bask under 115-125 degree basking spot.
 
I had a female argus for 7yrs and she had some of the prettiest high lighter looking colors. not a real tame beast but absolutley beautiful. Id go with the argus there colors are just awesome. If your anywhere near Berkley CA go check out a place called east bay vivarium. they have a huge selection of herps and theyre pretty awesome
 
Yeah I'm leaning more towards argus.
I went to a local shop to check out a Black Throat today, I was told it was CB but it was not very healthy. It wasn't being kept hot enough, and it's skin was very wrinkly - looked really dehydrated. It was pretty alert though, looking around/tongue flicking.

I really do not want to have an animal shipped to me, as I've had bad experiences with shipping live animals so I'm trying to find one locally.

I'm pretty far from EBV, but I'd like to check them out eventually.
