I think that my local humane society has a savannah monitor... I know it is a monitor of some sort... does anybody have a good pic of a savannah and your experience with them. I held him and he is very docile and shows no sign of aggression, he is also a lil thin 2ft. with tail and is eating everything thrown in his tank (two mice a week until he is back to a good weight). should I get him? he is really really cheap for his size.!.!.!.! ;)

they can be cool ass lizards. if it is a savannah the chances are it will be pretty even tempered if handled a lot. i had a buddy with one that was like 3.5 feet and ate huge rats. he was brutal, but you could pick him up and take him anywhere. he was cool with people, just not rodents. i have had friends with other monitors, and nile monitors are pretty crazy. i wouldnt recommend one unless you are experienced. on the other hand i had a savannah that at about 2 ft became totally uncontrolable. he wanted to kill everything and it hurt like hell getting him off the side of my hand. he would also tail slap me and leave welts. so if it is eating and friendly and cheap. BUY IT!!!! they are fun

3 ft with tail? I really want him I have a 40 br. that he could stay in for the time being I would want to make him a tall plywood tank that would be much larger than any glass cage that I could afford... and he is only 50 bucks...

I looked into monitors myself a while back; decided they were way more hassle to properly care for than i could manage. id like to get one some day, but while im a student its out of the question.

Get a common snapping turtle or pixie/bull frog instead.

I am a student too at Washington State Univ. Go Cougs... work at the only LFS in Pullman so care is not a big deal as Barnacle Bill gives me quite a bit of stuff for free or at a very small price as he has 27 years worth of supplies for caring for reptiles...

you have the space to house an active large reptile, and keep its space's room temp. controlled? this aint something you just throw in a 240g and feed once a week...

as soon as he is big enough I am going to build him a very large plywood tank and throw him in the basement he can eat whatever crawls in his tank...  I know what I am doing thanks for the advice and heads up...

I had one for 12 years named ISHTAR. They eat crickets, mice, rats and scorpions. I had him in an 10footby 6foot custom plexiglass enclosure. My friends python died while he was on vacatoin,so I gave him ISHTAR.I think ISHTARS still alive today.
