My lfs has several large mono a's. He has them in fresh water with no problems. Am I taking a chance in getting them and raising them in fresh water as well ? He feels there will be no problems.

id go brackish, if i remember correctly its better for them as they mature in size and age vs freshwater. once they reach larger sizes, then you can go full marine if you wanted to go that far.

Brackish fish need brackish water. Keeping it in freshwater for the duration of its life will be detrimental. I'm not sure how it's lifecycle is so it might be OK for awhile for them to live in fresh since they might do it naturally. They might also require full marine conditions when they reach adulthood, but again, I'm not sure.
That's what I don't like about some species. They might need that fresh-brackish-full marine cycle, and that just doesn't fit with what most other fish are supposed to have. So, if that's the case, you have a very limited number of options for tankmates.
Keep that stuff in mind and either correct the person that told you fresh would be fine or ignore what they say from now on.
Oh, and it doesn't matter how long it looks like a brackish fish is doing "fine" in freshwater. They're often tolerant of different salinities so it takes awhile for freshwater to weaken their immune systems to the point where an opportunistic pathogen or something kills them.

There is a member on here that has kept mono's from around 3'' up to the biggest i have ever seen around 10-11'' and they have allways been in freshwater never even seen a single dose of salt. So these are a very misunderstood fish. The person at yuor lfs could be very well informed on the subject i would ask how they got there info. Some people think they are experts on fish cause they have read what others say on the internet and take that info to be golden. Its pretty funny. But thats the web where everyone is a expert. i would do your on research. The member I beleive is west1. And if I remember correctly he said that these fish were maybe 8-10 years old.

Sorry hybridtheory. I was just going by what I had heard on this forum.
If they are a freshwater fish, then I think you'd be better off posting in the freshwater general section. The brackish section is always comparatively very quiet.

Mono Argentus are not freshwater, they are brackish. Please do not get them if you don't intend to keep them in brackish water and someday convert to full marine like they need.

I just reread what i had posted yesterday and i wanted to appologize myself because that came off way harsher than i was intending. I was just trying to say that they are a misunderstood fish. But most people repeat what they have heard and although it maybe true it also maybe untrue. Just like the last post before this one, it stated what has been said by many people on this and other sites. Does that automatically make it true. I think not.
