I've found that Monodactylus sebae is much more tolerant of fresh water than any of the other Mono species, but as adults I'd recommend that they are kept in brackish or even marine water.
Arapaimag keeps his adults in pure freshwater, so ask him for advice if you're going to take that route. Otherwise, keep medium to large sized fish in a tank with an SG of 1.005 or more.
