i wish that was the case one of my all time favorite unfortunaly fresh water is just not good enough for that fish ,watch them die at about 5 to 6 inches
I've never seen anyone that kept them long term in pure FW. The hobby is built on innovation and taking risks, so it might be worth an attempt...but personally I'd just go brackish at least.
Just go brackish or close to it we have a 150g that way and have several cichlids and clown loaches living with the monos and all are doing fine. I don't think our tank is full brackish but the monos look healthy and we have had them in there 2 years now.
currently raising 8 in a semi hard water set up with gravel as substrate. well water in our home is quite hard as we have deep well source near the sea. well about 1 kilometer away.
I've heard of some living a full life in freshwater, but as with all brackish fish that is a rare occurrence. It would be much better to start it in freshwater, and add brackish or salt water when and if the mono starts getting lethargic.
I raised mine to about 5" in freshwater, and then he had some major health issues. I turned his tank to a brackish tank, and he grew to 9". at this point i decided it was sillly to keep a bunch of tropical fish and a goldfish in brackish water, so I got rid of him.
