ok i have no clue why anyone would ever want to put msg in fish food... but i started reading the ingredients in my hikari sinking carnivore pellets. and sure enough it was there. theres no real point to it besides taste and that is a pretty nasty chemical to (it gives nasty migraines). so i was wondering if anyone has an answer to why they would put it in there? and if theres any other brand of sinking pellets for carnivores without msg.
thanks

Flavor enhancer (increasing profits while taking out other essential nutrients).

I agree with you, I wouldn't want to feed my fish MSG. However, can't really do anything about unless we all stop buying Hikari. Still one of the cheapest alternatives to fish food.

I'm more worried about what I put in my belley than what I put in my fishes :naughty:

From what I heard MSG actually isn't bad for you; it's basically a chemical component of certain types of seaweed (originally anyway). While the actual term MSG isn't used in the listing of products, companies cheat and use different chemical components that pretty much equal MSG when put together; as in, virtually every fast food restaurant and many restaurant chains (TGIF, Chili's, etc). The reason a large number of westerners are afraid of it is because of myth. It's not that it does anything to you specifically, just that many westerners have mild allergic reactions to it in strong doses. This is why a westerner will get sick at a Chinese restaurant and nobody else eating there will.

Alas, fish do not share this problem. lol

i sent an email to hikari asking why they put msg in their food . i'm not gonna go digging for it now but basically the reply was it is only trace amounts as a flavor enhancer .

Amen fishjunky.

Look up aspartame. I eat a relatively good diet and I can't drink diet coke or anything with aspartame in it. It gives me a huge migraine and makes me dizzy.

My fish can eat it, but I won't!

Exactly! Pretty much what I said above. Take out essential ingredients and add more "filler". I will still buy Hikari until there's a cheaper, quality alternative.

I'm looking at my bag of Hikari Gold, MSG is on the second line (out of 8) on the ingredients. The vitamins and minerals are trace ingredients.

well i started reading the backs of some wardley brand algae disks and i did not see msg in it...and it was also cheaper than hikari, and made in the u.s. but i'm not so sure if they also make other types of foods for carnivores, ect.

uhg that aspartame crap is nasty...your diet can affect many things about you, brain growth, muscle function, vision, even the way you look, and also allergies and sinus problems...
