Monster bala shark

Hey guys,

Is it rare to have a bala that' 10-11 inches? I know they CAN get big but I've never seen them that big. I have one that's prob 11 inches. Really cool fish remind me a lot of a carp. I feel like he belongs in a monster show tank...I got him for 20 dollars off Craigslist from a guy that lives 5 minutes up the road.
 
They are quite impressive when they reach large sizes.
 
We have 2 balas...one is about 6" the other about 8". We are currently trying to find a longer tank for them. Ours are very active also. Love these guys.
 
10-11" balas are not rare at all. They might seem rare because if you look at balas in fish stores they're always around the 2-4" mark. For years before i knew any better i always thought that balas were a small community fish because i only ever saw small specimens in stores. It's when you get them home and house them in a suitably large tank that you start to realise that these fish, quite rightly, are very befitting of our monster fish forum. My three were bought in 2015 at 2" apiece. Now one of them is 8" and the other two are about 7". Another couple of years and they'll all be around the 10" mark but I suspect their growth will slow down/stop then in my tank but in huge tanks i've seen balas go on to reach 14-15", now that is rare.

I got my 2 at anout 2" and it was a year ago. Thats why I am in process of attaining a larger tank...they are active and need more room. I have heard they can get up to 15". We are hoping to have a 350 gal tank and make it our 'shark' tank.
