what size tank you looking at?
Yeah,thats where it starts.

I'd go with Cynos, Odoe, and Tats. You're choices are limited by tank size, too small in my opinion for Dorado, ATF, or Armatus, long term anyways.

Lots of filtration as Characins fair poorly in sub par water conditions.

200g

I'd go with
multiple-- hujeta's, tats, red tail cuda's,cyno's, scombs, SD's, discus tetra's as dithers, yellow tail cuda's,

just make sure you get a min of 3 of each. And have lots of wood to break sight lines.

you could try a banded lep... but you can't have live plants, with exceptions of very strong ones...

Sure its what ever you want.

Characins are a very very diverse group of fish.

Some cheap characins IMO would be

Pink tail chaleus's (5-10$ ea)
Silver dollars 3" (6-8$ ea)
cardinal tetra's (.99-1.50$ ea)
discus tetra's 3" (2$ EA)
Hujeta's 5" ($6-8ea)
yellwo or red tail cuda's ($10-20ea)

as well as hundreds and hundreds of small tetra's can be had for less than $3 bucks a peice.

Just get the tank up and running and then go to the lfs's often with a little money and things will fall in place.

If you want community add Charax to the list above (if you can find them)

If you're open to future tank upgrades a small shoal of Dorado would be all you need. When available, if you get them small, they can be very reasonably priced. Twice the energy/activity level of most fish. Probobly not gonna be real friendly to any of the above tankmates.

Shoal of Brycon. Would fit tank and price requirements, but tank mates might not be an option.
