I Have several monster tropical predator tanks but would like to set up a native cold water tank containing Preds like :-

1-Northern pike
2-trout
3-Perch

Size wise i was thinking of 10-20" per fish

They would go in my 10x2.5 x2ft tank which is in my cellar

I can keep the temp at 60 degrees which is perfect.

my filters do 8 tank changes an hour and i have spray bars and 2 power heads for the current

Can anyone suggest a problem with this idea?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

if you want trout you would probably want a lower temperature if possible (most trout prefer 54 fairenheight, with brook and lake trout even colder) unless you are going for brown trout as they can tolerate warmer temperatures. also pike will outgrow that tank no problem, seeing as they get 3-4 feet in some areas. Also i wouldn't keep pike and trout together, pike are pretty aggressive and natural predators and competitors for trout plus they prefer warmer calmer water then trout. It shoud work out with one predator species assuming the perch are not too small but only get 1 or 2 of your chosen predator as pike and trout are territorial in tank confines, which is why farmed salmon and trout are so beat up due to aggression

sounds awesome though, i've always wanted a lake trout or brook trout tank but cannot due to regulations and university. good luck with your tank.

WantToKeepTrout, If you're in Ontario, Canada you can keep trout afaik. Purchase them from a licensed aquaculture facility (Pure Springs Trout Farms comes to mind) and they should be perfectly legal.

To the OP, im assuming the perch your talking about are european perch. I assume they are natural prey to the Northern pike you plan to get. I would get decent sized perch and a pike that is smaller then them but not too much that they will get eaten. I've got no idea how the trout and pike mix would work. Trout are very active and pike are very slow and lumbering.

Ive personally had pike attack and kill perch on the end of a line, and perch are known to be a part of pike diet........persoanlly i wouldnt put anything inwith a pike. Pike will try to arrack anything smaller than itself
