ok.

i have a chana micropeltes and it has hit the 12" mark.
allit does is crap. it is a crap machine. the crap machine is always on full production.

i'm getting tired of vacuuming every other day to keep the tank looking nice.
i have further taken out all the gravel, to make it easier, but it's still a crap machine.

so, luckily, if and when i get bored of keeping this magnificent speciemen of a species, i can free it in the Chao Praya river, of it's naitve land.

my question is, are all monster fish crap machines? i'm thinking of getting something new, but i want to consider maintenence on it. ie: is a PBAss a crap machine as much as a micropeltes? or and Arrow? Gars?

or, i'm i just feeding it too much? i feed it 2 cellphone sized nile tilapia / day. maybe if i cut it down to every 3 days, the crap machine would slow production?

thoughts?

thanks for your advice in advance.

That might be too much food. You could try cutting it down and see if the tank stays cleaner.

i only feed once a day... changing the water once a week...

gars would be nice.... interesting fish...

What size is the tank? What kind of filtration? Things like these are what determine the amount of work involved. You do seem to be feeding it a lot, I would cut down.

What ran through my mind when I read the title of this thread was, "No! Keeping monster fish is not worth it ! All of you should save yourselves the aggravation and quit now. Send me all your tanks, fish, and equipment and I will reluctantly sacrifice my sanity to selflessly relieve you of the burden!" but somehow I don't think anyone will believe me.
Contender, I would drop down to every second or third day feedings.

contender, feed it once a day.

Micropeltes are hungry hungry fish, I think it's cruel to feed a still growing micro any less than once a day.

keep in mind that in nature most preditory fish may only eat once a week if lucky. Our fish grow so fast and crap so much beause we always overfeed. I feed once every 3 days and another trick is turn down your heat a little bit, high temp makes the metabalism burn food quicker therfor they eat more and crap more. Also put some power heads in the tank near the bottom to keep the waste from resting on the bottom and bulk up on filtration that sits close to the bottom so it can pick up the waste. hope this helps

yup, you don't really need to feed predators that much.. just feed them once a day and you also should have days of fasting.. i only feed my monsters 4 days a week so that's 3 days of fasting per week.. but i feed my grow out juveniles every day until they get to about 12" then i cut it don't to about 6 or 5 days a week of feeding.. all my tanks are clear and i only do water changes once a week.. no daily siphoning for me..

and remember your filter has to be big and powerfull enough to cope with the bioload that monster fish produce ;)
