Goldie's off the scale
Published: Thursday, 17 April 2008, 1:43PM
Goldie the giant goldfish has grown to such a mammoth size his owner believes he is really some fin special.
He was bought for the grand sum of 99 pence from a pet shop 15 years ago and now weighs more than 2lb thanks to a fastidious regime by his elderly owner in Folkestone in Kent.
Usually, goldfish live for ten years but thanks to a weekly clean out and a drop of hot water in his tank every night he shows no sign of heading off into fishy heaven just yet.
Doting owner Ada Shaw, 83, said: "He gets fed fish flakes like clockwork twice a day and I always talk to him to keep him occupied.
"I sometimes think I'm making too much of a fuss over him. He has his very own character, he can be bossy and stubborn, but mostly he just swims about looking at himself."
Amazingly, Goldie isn't the world's biggest goldfish even though at 15.7in he is three-times the length of the average pet fish. That award goes to an 18.7in whopper in Holland.
