I am planning to build a very large aquarium most likely 2,000-100,000 gallons. I know that this is a very big difference but the tank is only in the very rough stages of planning and size is mostly based off of the economy. Because the tank is only in the rough planning stage almost nothing is certain but here are some of the things that are.

- larger than 2000g
- arowana, oscars, rtc's, tsn's, arapaimas, and monsters in general
- indoors
- bio filter (unless there are cheaper/easier alternatives)
- utilization of plants (cleaning harmful chemicals)
Please respond with any ideas you may have, as I said it's only in the rough stages of planning so everyone's opinion matters.
Thanks for your time,
Cam

This thread will get a lot of negative, doubtful responses. I just caution you to understand the magnitude of a 2,000 - 100,00gal tank. Something of this magnitude would have to have the building built around it. This is also a very large range in which you speak. This will be an expensive build.

I wish you the best, but you might provide more information about your build. You might put together a drawing using Google Sketchup

With such a vague direction so far I'm not sure you fully understand what you are trying to take one. I think that somewhere in the ballpark of 1K-3K is a better start.

You need to look at a few things....

1.) Will this tank ever have to be moved?
2.) What do you plan on building this tank out of? (plywood, block, poured concrete)
3.) What will you use for a viewing window? (glass or acrylic)
4.) Do you have to pay a water bill?
5.) Why do you feel plants are needed?
6.) When this tank is done what do you think that monthly cost or maint. will be?
7.)What's you're lever of fish keeping so far? (jumping from 100 gallons to 100K is not good idea)
8.) What type of heaters do you plan on using for this? (it will take at least 3Kw)
9.)If you do use plants, What type of lighting are you going to use?
10.) From a filtration standpoint what type of Bio filter are you talking about?

Let us know what you think about these questions and that should put you more on the right track. You're just thinking to broad right now. You need to know the exact size to even think about planning b/c that will influence every other step.

Do you mind disclosing your planned budget? That, more than anything else I think is going to define how things go.

Just out of curiosity do you have space for a 100,000 gallon tank? Thats huge!!! Are you thinking like a pond or are you thinking about an actual above ground tank?

Trust me no one has been unkind yet. We are simply trying to grasp what you are trying to build. You can't say that you're going to build a 100K tank and get taken seriously without some outstanding plans already in the works. We are trying to help and figure out what all you'll end up needing but a few things need addressed first. and we can point you in the right direction.

Obviously no one here understoof that my budget is based off of the economy. Im just trying to discuss and gather information. I do have room for a 100,000 gallon tank or more.
