After wandering through these forums for awhile I really fell inlove with all those monster fish.
now before getting a kilometer aquarium I wanted to what kind of cool monsterous fish I should try getting started with... something that doesnt grow too large and doesnt cause too much problems...

I only recently joined after becoming enamoured of the idea of big tanks with big fish. I plan to start with birchirs as my first monsters. I also think that some knife fish and some of the Little-Big catfish would make good starter monsters. Or you could go with cichlids like oscars, jack dempsys, or frontosas (the list is really endless when it comes to cichlids). I'm afriad I don't know a lot about the more active predators, so hopefully someone will chime in with some good suggestions for them, if that's what you're interested in.

Start with at least a 75 gallon tank and fish that only get up to 12-14 inches long. Before you know it, you'll be saving up for your first 300 gallon tank!

Knife fish grow to over a meter... I rather getting a florida gar. And Oscars are the worse american chiclids... I had a couple with a couple of Green Terrors and Firemouths and the Oscars gave them hell.
The Bichirs seems awsome though.

It depends a lot on your tank size, for the most part try to keep fish that are not more than 2/3 as long (adult) as the tank is wide, so for a 55g standard that would be 8" or less. Eels can be much longer than that rule. Bush fish, nandus, raiamas species, odoe pike, and some types of snakeheads are all good, hardy fish that don't get too huge. If you are willing to keep fish to a meter long try an arowanna, I like the african one.

I would go with a jag in a 55 gallon tank.

Keep away form Oscars.
55 are easer to find.
But bigger is always better when it comes to fish keeping.
My advice

get a 55 or 75 tank. maybe start with aggressive SA/CA cichlids that max out at 6-9". something maybe like convicts, firemouths, salvinis, dempseys, etc... hardy fish, not very expensive. just what id do/done.

SH are illegal in the US, not everywhere.

I think they are legal in your posted location

How about one of these, heheh.
