The big black marking on the dorsal fin is a big give away but I don't depend on it. I look at how the body shape, is the fish a broad fish or a shorter slim fish and the coloration or pattern of it. By all means if all that doesn't help, then I would ask for a vent. It takes a lot of time to observe a lot of males and females to really tell just by looking at them without depending on the black marking on the dorsal fin. And the reason is because the black marking on the dorsal fin is not always accurate.

Yeah, you are right. Instead of me saying that the black on the dorsal shows that it is a female, I should have said that the black on the dorsal shows that it is most likely a female.
