I was just wondering if anyone has good info on Moorish Idols. I have had mine for almost 1.5 years and he is very healthy. I bought him because he had just come into the shop and was being bullied by a large yellow tang so naturally felt sorry for him. My tank was only one mth old at the time so can only assume that i got lucky with this fish (i named him Minuu). Has anyone else had success?

Thanks Emi,

the wikipedia site had better info than my book and all other sites i have looked at. I am paranoid though after reading "most that make it past a year die shortly after".

Hey Ricko,
Welcome to MFK! Why don't you take a look at this thread.

As it's on the same animal and I am sure you will get lots of good information.
As far as the basics go for these animals, check this link.

I am not understanding the thread??? your asking for info on the animal 1.5 years after you bought it??? in 1.5 years you should be an expert on the species. If you just bought the fish and the tank is only a month old, I serioulsy doubt success. These fish are not sensitive to water quality like many believe. Its there eating habits which make them hard to stay a live. They need a large amount of coraline algae in there diet which a 1 month old tank will have zero of. They also need to be fed throughout the day and not once or twice a day like most tanks are fed.

I have a moorish in my 150 predator tank. He has been in there for about 8 months with no ill effects. The tank has a picasso trigger and a panther grouper. The grouper and trigger are meat eaters as is the moorish although they won't touch coraline algae. So I lit the tank as if it were a reef and I dosed calcium as if it were a reef. This way coraline would grow like nuts. Then I added the moorish. I feed the the tank meaty foods once in morning and once at night. During the day the moorish can graze on coraline to keep his diet in check all day.

I am not accusing you of anything although I am just gonna say hypothetically(sp?) if you just bought the fish and your tank is only a month old bring it back, it will die

I completely understand your concern if you think i just bought the fish, but i have no reason to lie and, even though you state you are not accusing me of anything, am quite offended.

The thread to me was good, my books are not very detailed and i only hooked up to the net last mth so i'm not a pro at using these things (i find it easier to keep my Moorish Idol alive).

Anyway, i have next to no coraline algae and for some reason never have(maybe he is eating it). I have put sponges in the tank and he doesn't touch them either. He eats everything else i put in the tank from frozen food, all pellet and flake food and his favourite is "Spectrum Thera+A Large Fish Formula" ( which i have almost got him hand feeding).

Its a shame you don't live in Brisbane Australia as i would let you see him everyday to prove it.
What else can i say????

settle down guys!!!!

Its possible that someone keeping a fish for even 5 years and not knowing anything about it. I run into that all the time. after keeping fish for 8 years, im a good believe that anythings possible.

lol. We are all settled here, just expressing opinions and they will always vary!

Very good point as well!!!
Thank you.

Lol that's good. Morish Idols are great fish but very hard too keep hopefully u get some more info on them and are able to keep them for longer. Write TFH and share your experience and maybe they'll write about it.
