Hey everyone I picked this guy up from my lfs the other day. I was told he was full freshwater and that he eats like a pig, they also said he doesn't need to be brackish but I figured I would ask the real experts. They we're right about the eating anything part cuz this thing will eat floating or sinking Cichlid pellets or any type of food that catches his eye. An ID or any info would be awesome. Thanks!

Idk the species but there is no such thing as a freshwater moray. He will probably need brackish eventually in order to maintain good health.

I also have whats labeled as a "freshwater moray eel". It's scientific name is gymnothorax tile and it does need some brackish
they are extremely hardy. I went on vacation for about 2 weeks during winter break and when I came back, I found that the heater had broken in the tank and that everything had died except the moray eel which wasnt moving. I quickly added a couple of heaters and after a couple of months I got it to eat with ghost shrimp. I have kept mine from full freshwater all the way to full saltwater. But i have found its appetite is best at around .13 specific gravity. And btw that eel looks very skinny you might want to power feed or something.

I think G.tile also on the ID. There is one species of moray eel that supposedly doesn't need saltwater or brackish water even. They are from rivers in New Guinea. It's Latin name is G. polyuranodon. There are some MFKer's here on the site that keep them in pure freshwater. They seem to be doing well. Here's a picture of one. They are very beautiful.IMAG0531.jpgThanks.
