A friend of mine wants to know if moray eels are capable of recognizing their owners.

I've never had a moray eel, but I'm assuming that they are not intelligent enough to recognize people. My fish don't recognize me. They respond to any person who walks in front of the tank, in anticipation of being fed. Fish are a simple life form. I'm sure that some people will state that they're fish can recognize them. Here we go . . .

my eel would recognize me all the time. it swims only when im around. comes out and jumps out the tank all the time. ive seen him shoot spikes/needles at other people. i think that proof enough that they do recognize the owner.

Moray Eels, at least the G. Tile is practically blind and I believe it cannot tell things apart. When I feed it, it goes after my feeding tongs which I rarely use, it goes after my hand, but it still cannot find krill or smelt until he bumps into it. When I walk up to the tank when he is hungry, he comes out, but he does that for everybody even though I am the only person that feeds him.

Some fish though, I believe can learn to recognize their owners. My rainbow wolf seems to recognize me and only really pays attention to me.
