Ok well my tap water is 7.0 and I understand I need to get it up to like 8.0 for africans. Well they have been in 7.0 there whole lives(pet store) so is it necesary for me to bring it up to 8.0???? If I do need to raise ph with substrate then what will happen when i do water changes with my 7.0 ph tap water????? how do i prevent those changes in ph???

Are the fish looking fine at the pet store? If so then stay with the 7.0 there will be no need to raise the ph. My ph is like 7.2 and they do fine:)

If they look healthy and colorfull at the pet place, then you pH should be fine, if not then raise it a little no need to go 8.0 try 7.5ish if anything. I keep mine around 7.6-7.8 but I also have naturally hard water where I live so I usually dont need to do anything to it. With water changes you should be fine, if you wanna raise it you can also use buffers and as long as you leave them in the tank you shouldnt have to full with the pH. Buffers could be types of rocks you use in your setup, sand or curshed coral bottom, sea shells there are pleanty of things you can use. =)
