Great collection you've got going! I'm glad you haven't had any problems with your substrate, the bichirs look big enough to pass gravel that size but be careful :)

I had similar gravel and didn't think my bichirs were eating it, but when I sold a friend some fish, he said he kept finding the substrate in his barebottom tank!

Nice collection, And i wouldn't worry about that substrate at all, looks exactly the same as the substrate i have used for several years with bichirs ranging from 4" up to 22" never have had an issue.

Thanks for the kind words about my collection! I've kept Polypterus on different sizes of substrate over the years and have never had any issues. I like the look of sand the best (especially Red Flint) but have had issues with it getting into my FX5s when they stir the substrate either while trying to bury themselves or while feeding. I've had to replace one motor and one impeller assembly because of it (I even cut the intake tubes extra short to keep them far away from the bottom of the tank). I also could never see having a Polypterus tank without driftwood. Unfortunately, when pieces of it break off or when Plecos chew it up, it leaves an unsightly mess blended into the sand that drives me crazy-I just don't like the extra maintenance it seems to take to keep a sand substrate tank looking clean. I've been using 1/8" Red Flint gravel for the last 4-5 years in this setup and I really like it!

really cool. really fell in love with polys recently. they remind me of a lizard thats evolving to live in the water if that makes any sense? like a missing link or vice versa
