i've got a 36g corner tank (34" across, 24" deep and 21" high) that im debating on turning into a dwarf pike tank. i was thinking a pair of pikes, hopefully compressiceps but they seem hard to find now, a school of tetras and maybe another smaller cichlid species. i've got some driftwood and plants to go in there. do you guys think this would work or is it too small of a tank

I've been able to keep dwarf pikes in a 36"x15" footprint with other dwarf cichlids (Laetacara are my favorites, but also have done blue rams and african rams). Just make sure the tetras have large heads!!! *lol*

Compressiceps are the most ground orientented of the commonly available species, which makes them a bit more touch and go with other dwarf cichlids. The others tend to stay in the lower-middle region of the tank, especially if you have tall, veritical driftwood.

anything i go with i'd have to order. here's the tank right now

If you go with the compressiceps (which I love their color/pattern, even though most people believe them to be plain), I would add several smooth river rocks around the base of the driftwood. Coming from just below the rapids, they are more used to rocks and driftwood. In my tank they always chose the caves made by the rocks rather than the driftwood.

cool. would they go well with apistos? i was at a local guys house who had a ton of different apistos and got drawn to them :D from what i've seen compressicps stay pretty small

I personally wouldn't do compressiceps with apistos, but would have no issue with notos or regani with them. The compressiceps have much more attitude and since they stay closer to the bottom than the other two, it could lead to issue.

But then you could get a pair of one of the nasty apistos like nijsseni, that might very well work.

mayb a pair of pike top minnows but u cant have tank mates then

compressicus fo sho. i got a nice male in my 55g with some cory cats and a blue steel apisto. its heavy planted but like darth said they prefer rock caves. i got plents of driftwood but he prefers this one cave that is the perfect size for him

Damn you people are making me want to get back into pikes........
