I see Channa Argus.
This is the species in Maryland.

Fault doesn't come into it anymore.
The fact is they are there breeding like crazy and destroying native stocks.

Much that I love Channa (feel free to check my history) I think it's a worthy cause!

I still think the statement that a snakehead can bite through a steel toe boot or walk a mile on land is pure fantasy.
We have a ton of waterways with convicts, red crayfish and Asian carp in them. This is simply due to irresponsible owners.
Who knows if they can eradicate them from Maryland, but I wish them luck. Nevada has had no luck with Malaysian trumpet snails, red crays or the carp.

Of course the whole biting through the steel toe cap thing is just rubbish, but that is just lazy journalism on Yahoo and the Washington posts behalf.
Just like how they report that they are a native of Africa!
No Yahoo, Parachanna haven't invaded US yet...

So much ignorance in the media today. Would it kill the author to do some research first? I could have written a much better article than that. Complete BS.

Go channa go! I support Channa on its way to dominate the north american habitats. Destroy that genetic trash that is no match for you :D

Actually, you are wrong. They've had no negative impact on the so called "native" fish there. If you take a look at the Potomac River, most of the fish in there aren't native at all. As with most lakes, rivers, and bodies of water in the U.S., they've introduced largemouth bass, sunfish, catfish, and other fish. These fish have taken a toll on real native fish in some cases. Here's a really good example. In the Sacramento River, introduced "native" sunfish have wiped out the Sacramento perch. The Sacramento River was once the only home to these perch. The only place you can even find them now would be in a couple of small lakes outside of their original habitat. You will not find a single perch in the Sacramento River anymore. The reasoning behind this is simple. Largemouth bass and sunfish are more desirable. They've got tons of bass tournaments every year all across the U.S., and fishing tackle companies sell lots and lots of things to people for bass and sunfish. It's big business. It's okay for these desirable "native" fish to kill off other things. But it's not okay for snakeheads because there's no money to be made.
Cobra snakeheads have been living in Florida for 20 years now, living along side by side with other fish. No one even made a fuss about them until the whole Potomac River incident 10 years ago. These Florida snakeheads haven't made a dent in native fish population at all. In fact, young snakeheads are food for largemouth bass there.

Thats what i say. That entire "invasive species bogus" is a myth. And it is an even bigger myth to believe it could be stopped. Some live from that money that is spent to fight those species. They do more harm...If you see any ranger who wants to tell you tales about the evil snakehead, lauch about him.

So much ignorance, where to start. First, no they arnt destroying natives or breeding out of control. Thier brood makes good feeders for the native species and they provide a fresh water fish that puts up an insane fight. So in actuallity they are quite useful.

Next, no its not a "worthy cause". Most of the species cant live in MD, nor can they live in a majority of the US. Only a few species can survive the extreme cold our waters get, so where is the logic in that? Its a state by state problem NOT, a country wide problem. If animal A can survive in Florida but cant in New York, why is that New yorks problem? Its not, its floridas and it should have stayed that way from the beginning.
