mormyrids - long term success stories?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ditto.. from my work with them in the lfs we always separated them and gave them sand/dw and live blackworms/frozen bloodworms to feed on, and they did very well in our care until sold ( most where sold by 2-4 weeks). I've seen a few youtube updates ect of the dolphins and that seems to be the running theme as well. I acquired one last year but it came in in poor shape and never managed to come back from it. I didn't have the best start-up set-up for it either as it was one of those that just came in and you never see them so had to take the chance or not right there.

I hope to see some action in this thread. I've been looking for this information for a while. I've been wanting to start a tank for a Mormyrus Rume or Longistrotis but, I don't want to waste my time and money on a fish with a history of little to no success.

I've had my Pete (peterson's elephant nose) for about 6 months and he is pretty fat and sassy. He is 4 or 5 inches and very active.

Thats a huge elephant nose! Probably does a great job getting the lil debris out of all the little crevices, im thinking about getting one just for an oddball cleaner

I was at the Steinhart aquarium a long time ago and remember seeing a tank full of elephant noses there and one of them was HUGE! I'm guessing around 8 or 9"! Never saw any come remotely close to the size of that one.

I'd like to keep track of this thread, too! They are awesome - although I have not tried one of any species yet.
Also - if anyone has them, any luck getting them on pellets or other dry foods at all ?

I'm pretty sure the elephant nose scavenges for scraps at the bottom, it shouldn't be hard to get it on prepped foods. Not sure about others though
