Hi. I have a pet tadpole and it seemed a little sick for the past 2-3 days. I noticed this morning that he's starting to grow his hind legs. He's still eating, but he doesn't seem as active. And his mouth area is a little red.

Is some of the inactivity from morphing? And is the redness from his mouth from his mouth starting to change too?

idk about the redness of the mouth (pic?), but the inactivity is due to him living alone, u never see a tadpole by itself xD

I tried to take pictures but he started to move around a lot again. More active now than he has been yesterday. I've been feeding him boiled lettuce and algae flakes.

Should I buy him some tadpole friends and then transfer my fish (two female platys) to another tank? When I bought him, I was instructed by the LFS that the tadpoles should live individually because they might eat each other when they become frogs.

They wont eat each other until they get bigger, and only if there is considerable size difference. They do like company. My tadpoles swim fullspeed into the glass, rocks and even jump out of the tank, and they dont have any red spots at all.

I changed the water many times since I noticed the lethargic behaviors and I even separated it from its tankmates (a school of tetras) last night so they wouldn't get any of the symptoms.

The frog now looks like its going to be a goner. The tadpole's body seemed to waste away overnight. Normally, i would expect the wasting away to be a result of the fish nipping him, but he was completely fine and whole when I separated him from the fish last night. Now his tail looks like its rotting away.

I was really excited too because he was just beginning to morph. Now he looks miserable. And I feel terrible.

Would euthanizing him be humane? Whats the best way to do it? I was thinking about putting him in ice cold water, then putting him in the freezer.

putting him in the freezer in water is the most humane way, but id post a pic first to see if he really looks bad

This is what he looked like before thanksgiving:

DAMN........ he aint gonna make it........

when u changed the water, did u leave any of the original water in the tank, or save some of it to mix in with the new water??

I always leave some of the original water in the tank. And I always put water conditioner in the new water to remove chlorine and metals before putting it in the tank.

He was already starting to look like that before i changed the water, but he still had all of his tail!
