i bought a 50lb bag of morton solar salt for $5 at home depot. ive read on this site it is ok to use, is this good salt? how much do i add to water to treat my fish when needed?

You would only want to use the salt for the treatment of ich, freshwater fish otherwise don't need salt. Brackish and marine need marine salt.
When treating for ich, basically built quantity of salt to @ 2 tsp./gallon. I've gone up to 3 or 4 when I had a bad outbreak. Slowly raise your heat to 88 or so, and keep this up for up to two weeks to ensure you've killed the hatched parasites. Ich attaches to the fish, eats through slime covering and embeds in skin, then falls off, hangs out on the tank floor for a few days germinating, then hatches many little boogers.
Cautions: plants don't fare too well with this treatment; if you take it up slowly, say over a 48 hour period, certain types of fish e.g. catfish (non-scaled fish) will do fine.
It's critical to go the full time period to get rid of the ich, or it just hangs out and will attack any weak fish.
As I said, otherwise, you don't need salt in the water for freshwater, although some LFSs will tell you otherwise.;)

uhh... salt is a widely used substance for basically any condition, not just ich. and im not going to sit and count out 200+ tablespoons of salt, but thanks:screwy:

there are 16 tablespoons in a cup, use that conversion to make it easier......or you could just use a QT tank that is smaller

Treat in a quarantine tank if possible to reduce the required dosage of meds/salt. Agree with X24.

I use salt as a preventative and tonic with every water change. You get a lot of trace minerals with it. I use one tablespoon per five gallons of water. I premix my water with salt and dechlor in a barrel, then pump to the tanks.

I stopped using salt about a year ago. I like it for treatment but for general use I saw no added benefit for the fish.
