I'm Where I'm At
I have a good size wading pool that i'm not using. i'm just eyeballing but it's collected maybe 50 gallons of rain and is hard to drain out completely.

if i bought a couple gallons of bleach detergent or something to pour into it will that kill them off? i don't wanna buy any mosquito fish because they'll end up dying. don't wanna do that

thanks

A layer of vegetable oil will do the trick since they need to breathe. Usually 2 tablespoons for a barrel, so proably a cup would be more than enough for a wading pool. Whatever it takes to spread over the surface.

You have to be careful with bleach in open water birds and other animals might drink from. They usually have something at say maybe the garden section in Wal-Mart or home depot though.

thanks guys

i didn't even think about birds or other animals drinking from it. i do get birds that come down to bathe it seems so that's outta the question now.

i'll look for stuff at walmart later. gotta buy diapers anyways. i'll also try the veggie oil thing. but is one cup enough? the surface area is like 10'x15'

It will spread out and form a very thin layer. I'm sure someone versed in science could explain why, but it will spread farther than you'd expect. I don't think a small amount of veggie oil would hurt an animal, but I wouldn't use motor oil or something like that.

Since you're on MFK, I would think you are a fishkeeper, the larvae are fabulous live food. Just skim the surface with a net every day, anything from fry to adult cichlids love mosquito larvae..

I'm kind of surprised to still find mosquito larvae at this time of the year. I thought they would've died off by now. I have a bucket that I use to collect them and feed them to my community tank.

I could feed them to my daughter's fish but I eh, too much trouble. Got tons of flake

I saw the mosquito dunks looking online but my Walmart don't carry. Gotta order online only. Gonna check home depot tomorrow

the one by me has them in the area with the mice rat traps poison. I don't know if they stock them year round though. they don't work very well sitting on top of the ice.
