Mosquito Larvae in my tank!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Guess your monster fish don't think of mosquito larves as much of a meal.
More surface agitation should deter the mosquitos from laying the eggs on the surface of the water.
I would recommand getting a wavemaker to blow the water at the surface.

put in a betta..they feed on mosquito larvae like crazy..since i live in the tropics mosquitoes are a big menace and they lay eggs wherever they can even in empty coconut shells:-)..i have a planted tank in which i have a betta..they eat the larvae and keep me malaria free..:-)

the betta would be gone.... even before any mosquito larve are eaten.

^AGREE^More surface agitation. I have heard Melaluca oil works, but I cant remember if I heard it here or from a fish guy I know. Anyway, melafix wont work, unless you get the 5% usually for pond applications.

Medication/Chemicals are a really bad idea.... in dealing with ray and gars... I would def agree w/ the added surface aggitation though. I would try rosy minnows or mosquito fish personally... both are fast agile fish that are cheap and will eat the larva. depending on what your set-up looks like you can add a "box" with holes to allow the minnows/mosquito fish to hide from the rays/gar. put some fake or live floating plants in the box and you'll find they won't dissapear as fast as you'de think. or you can simply restock as needed.

Depending on how big your fish are, they may leave the Mosquito Fish/Guppies alone, but as mentioned, your best bet is to just have more surface agitation.

get a bubbler with an airstone it should work
