Moss Balls

Ive been looking at the moss balls at the LFS and I was wondering if anyone had any exp. with them.
Are they worth the $10 for one a little bigger than a gulf ball. How big will it get, how fast do they grow in low to medium light. Dose anyone know of any pros or cons with them. Could I break it apart and get it to grow on structures in the tank?

That all depends on whether it's ACTUALLY a moss ball... If its solid & doesn't float, then it's probably a Marimo Ball, which is actually a species of algae, not moss. Marimo does not grow like moss & won't adhere to decor/wood/rocks, but every LFS seems to call it a "moss ball" anyway.

If it does float & has more "whispy" moss-type growth, then I'd say it's java moss wrapped around a styrofoam ball & no way it's worth 10 bux. Plenty of people out there will throw you free java moss & you can make anything you want out of it. Including balls...all you want cuz that stuff never stops growing!
