I've heard of people using moss, almond leaves or peat to soften water. Is it Sphagnum moss thats used? If so, is it better to use the dried stuff or the "100% natural" stuff thats a bit more green & wet? Both boxes said they were all natural with no additives, but the dry stuff is supposed to be super-absorbent & I'm not sure thats the right one... Thanks!

people actualy use peat moss for softening water which is not a moss at all its this brown earthy stuff that spaghnum moss grows on naturaly. naturaly found in peat bogs

the moss itself will do absolutly nothing except rot and trash your water quality, peat will act as an ion exchange resin and take calcium out of the water thereby softening it

Gotcha! I looked for the Fluval brand peat moss/media at my local petsmart & petco, but didn't find any. Thats why I was asking, I thought maybe they were the same or at least close enough... I guess I'll have to order it. I'm just tired of buying water-softening pillows. They only work well for the first few re-charge cycles, then they start to go downhill. This Houston water is ridiculously hard & my loach's colors seem to be much brighter after softening. Any suggestions?

You can buy peat in any gardening center in huge bags for cheap. Usually its really close to the sphagnum moss.

I have the same issue with hard water, mine comes from the Missouri River..
GH higher than scale with little to no KH.

I started adding RO to Prime treated tap water to reach the desired GH w/o impacting PH as much as peat does.
