Bought a new tank today and will be going for an amazon look for my RBP's. My friend suggested replacing one of the sponge filters out of my external canister and adding Live Sphagnum Moss to help add a bit of colour to the water and it will also act as a natural filter. Is he an idiot or is it good advice?

no light=dead moss. and there are much better filter materials than dead moss.
perhaps he means peat? not a filter media, but will tint and acidify the water.
or maybe he is just an idiot.
however, live aquatic moss, in the tank with light, will contribute to your biological filtration.
