Over there
Hey guys, since I'm tearing down my big tank, the largest I have set up is a 40 and I really wanna try out a wolf, obviously I can't keep any hoplias sp. so I was wondering what the most colorful wolf is that could live in a 40 or 55 for life. Also I would like 1 that would be fine with 2 bichirs, 8"-12". This will be my first wolf so any and all info is greatly appreciated.

I would choose a regular erythrinus erythrinus or an erythrinus kesseleri (if you could find one). Not sure if it would be perfectly fine with the 8-12 inch bichirs with ideal harmony. If the wolf is too small, it could be bullied or eaten by the bichirs. Plus erythrinus are very nippy towards tankmates even if it's are smaller than the tankmate. I didn't have the success that I wanted when I kept a 6 inch ery ery with three 7 inch bichirs because my ery was constantly chasing and harassing by bichirs and completely outcompeting the bichirs for food. But that's only my experience.

There are other people in MFK that has more luck than me.

That's what I've heard. I dunno if it makes a difference but the 2 bichirs are an ansorgii and black volta endli. Since they're more aggressive than the upper jaw species, maybe it'll work better. The ery ery was actually the species I was looking at but I wanted to know what other ery sp. were out there before I make a commitment.

I have an Ery Ery with 7 upper jaws with no issues. The Wolf would attack the Fei Feng and the Fei Feng would go after the Bichirs. The Fei Feng is no longer in the tank. The Wolf and the Compressiceps go at it once in a long while, but that's all the aggression I see.

Sweet! Looks like the ery ery is what I'm going for then. Now I just gotta find 1 locally.

Iv had my ery ery "bloody face" for over a year now, I've had him with bichirs from the start and he can get pushy with em at feeding time but doesn't bother them much. All my bichirs with him are upper jaws, ornate polli buettokoferri weeksii and delhezi. The weeksii is smallest at like 5 inch and the wolf is 8 inch easy now they eat next to each other fine. He will be joined by 2 teugelsi soon also

Aggression and jumping have greatly lessened with age with my ery, he half heartedly chases my green texas sometimes but that's it. Something that's gotten worse is his hatred for sponges and gravel vacs, he attacks them whenever they're in the tank when he was younger he'd hide. He almost got my finger the other day while I was sponging the glass. Be careful with em they will bite ya haha

Haha that's what I like to hear! The more vicious the better! I won't be having any cichlids with him becuz I'm just not into those. Whenever I see them, I just see feeders. I just gotta find 1 now!

Yeah I used to feel the same way but the colors, spangles and pearls are what drew me to trying em out, not many oddballs can match the color of a green texas. Now I'm trying to breed the Texas to a festae then the hybrid to a jag, trying to create a vicious but beautiful predatory looking cichlid.

Yeah aggression is what you'll get lol mine has decapitated 5 different tank mates, didn't eat them just got a solid hold on the head and thrashed

To quote Henry Ford: "You can have any color [wolffish] as long as it's black"

;)
