Thanks but could I keep them in a peaceful sa community with tetras and a few scarabs?

Maybe in a large enough tank the acaras would be okay but I’d suggest discus with Angels and peaceful community dithers and bottom dwellers

I do agree the angels are tough cookies, they have taken out all dither fish I have tried. But as far as my discus and angels go they don’t bother each other and keep to themselves. I have more bullying of just the same type fish with each other

To me, some of the most colorful, yet relatively peaceful cichlids of South America, are the Gymnogeophagines.
They are non-piscavorine and inept at predation (slow), stay relatively small (7"), and will tolerate smallish tanks like 55 gal or 75s.

Easily kept with Buenos Aires tetras, Cory's, and other species from Uruguay, Argentina and other parts of southern S America.
And a bonus, easily kept at room temp (no heater needed)

Maybe not as colorful, but a common turquoise severum is incredibly peaceful IME. I wouldn’t mix one with discus, but it can definitely get along with community fish that aren’t small enough to eat.
I don’t have any good pics of my guy - but they change colors like a chameleon.
