I dont know if you would call it a mistake but I have a hard time waiting 3 weeks to add the fish so I usually use stuff to speed up the nitrate jump and add the fish after about 2 weeks
Putting fish in too early. I usually wait one week then put in a few hary fish so it doest look so boring. I used 3 danios and 2 minnows that learned to live in the aquarium. Only one minnow died though. But it was pretty big and it might have been an old fish.
doing water changes with 5 gallon buckets.. tanks are pretty high too so back hurts afterwards lol
Judging the clarity of the tank water with my nose right up to the tank. At such close range you'll notice every miniscule, insignificant particle and air bubble. This leads to excessive water changes and the excessive water bill that comes with them LOL.
It drove me batty until I started standing a few feet back when judging water clarity. I'm a bit OCD about such things, so it's a test of will power for sure.
