like the title says - whats the best sand for the $$ -

would rather spend more $$ on the live rock -

can you use pool filter sand? from a home dept type place?

the cheapest way to go is a bare bottom, easier to keep clean too. To make my substrate I invited a few friends over and steamed a huge pot of clams, told everyone to throw their shells in the sink, gave them a quick rinse and viola, substrate and a good meal ;)

well... i'd like coral sand, but you can go bare too.

it works, but aragonite or shells are much better for their Ph and calcium buffering properties.

bare is more up to you would you rather see rocks and a tank bottom or sand if sand just buy bulk dry aragonite either fine or granulated depending on personal preference and after a month in there the living organism's from the live rock will make the sand live as they will reproduce in it and so forth.

^ ^ ^ ^ Agreed...

Also, if going barebottom, i would suggest some protection for the glass, in the form of some egg create bits so the rock is not sitting directly on the glass...just personal statement of course, just dont like rock being glass....lol

it needs calcium to work best
