Most effective dither fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i love having a mix of silver dollars and tinfoil barbs

There really isn't one single species that is the most effective. Like others said, it all depends.

The best dither fish would be:
1.) Attractive in its own right.
2.) Able to survive whatever the 'main' fish(es) is/are.
3.) Must not completely outcompete the 'main' fish(es). Or else what you actually love will starve to death and die.
4.) Must not be able to (easily) kill your 'main' fish(es).
5.) Behaviours must be compatible with the tank.

Basically. Imo.

Used mosquitofish as dithers for my parrot cichlids and African cichlids.

Smaller dithers- Giant Danios: they are very fast and with proper care can have nice color and reproduce. I have even had success keeping them with md-lg cichlids in bigger groups.

Large dithers- Tin Foil Barbs and Gold Tin Foil Barbs: love these guys first off...they grow very fast, can take quite a beating, and from my experience even can dish one out(they have no problem turning and taking on some of my md cichlids or atleast reminding them that they are tough too). Always my choice for larger cichlids!
I know and have seen alot of people using Silver Dollars(never personaly tried them) and they always seem to be beat up or very shy/timid so again TFB for the win.

Sd's for CE/SA more aggressive cichlids. Giant danios for smaller and less aggressive species.

I've tried Tiger Barbs in the past and my Jack Dempsey ate them all lol. Picked them off one by one mostly at night.
