Just curious as to what some of you believe my be the most effective type filter for big bio loads. I currently am running a k1 filter bit have been intrigued by the bakki filters and the ultima II type filters? Does the ultima type filters need additional mechanical filtration or possibly combining a ultima and a bakki filter? Thoughts, opinions and comments please

Hello; Having more mechanical filtration is OK but, in my experience, a portion of the total. I guess that if you can afford more and do not mind fooling with it, then go for it. I do not suppose you can have too much mechanical but I don't think it will replace the other portions of tank upkeep.
Some of the other stuff includes regular substrate vacuums during water changes and regular water changes.
Another practice that has been of benefit for me is to reduce overall feeding of mature fish. I use to feed too much too often. This led to many of the issues that are mitigated now by reduced feedings and fasting days each week.
Perhaps the bigger improvement of water quality for my tanks has been the move to light stocking densities.

Some MFK members running Ultima II filters feel that they need more mechanical filtration than just the Ultimas. Other members are happy with just running their Ultimas. If you are serious about bakki filters, the "real" Momotaro Bakki House Media is hard to find in the US. Majestic Koi is the only US source that I was able to find. Of course, there are a lot of knock off imitation Bakki House media out there.

This is a great thread by Hulon. If I had not already purchased my Ultimas, I would have gone with Biowaves.
You might PM Kendragon...he is the expert on Biowaves.

What are you using as mechanical filtration in front of the ultima?

My tank is not set up yet...after 5+ years.... I have six Pentair Rainbow RTL-100 filters that I plan on using for mechanical filtration. We have two RTL-25s for mechanical filtration on our 300 gallon tank. These are basically pool/spa filters, but commonly used on large reef tanks for mechanical filtration. Here's an aquatic site that actually sells them. (Cheaper on pool/spa sites)

We were introduced to them when we set up our 300 gallon tank and I contacted a man who sets up and maintains reef systems. Love, love love the mechanical filtration that RTLs provide.

My plan is to use two Ultima II 4000s strictly for biological filtration. We do have 8 ft of external overflow boxes and a 405 gallon sump, so plan on throwing in other stuff for redundant filtration. Will use the Momotaro Bakki House Media as submerged media in the sump (not as effective, but I have it, so why not). Will have to use a couple of 5 gallon filter socks on the sump. Actually plan on using one of the Ultimas to draw from the sump and return the water to the main tank. Because our big tank upgrade has taken so long, I've purchased whatever has caught my eye browsing fish forums. Have a Clarity CL-3 we are going to throw into the mix..
