Just wanted to get some opinions on what most people think are some of the most important factors in determining the growth rate of rays.

I have been feeding my rays once a day with a variety of diet like shrimp, smelt and squid. Yet some of them haven't grown as much as the others. Just curious how much do u guys feed ur rays. And if water changes affect the growth at all, that is, does more frequent water changes means faster growth ??

please share your thoughts/experiences.

More water changes the faster they will grow for sure.

well i fed pellets in the AM and would feed shrimps etc when i got home... the cleaner the water the healthier the ray so i would say that in combo with good food is a big factor for growth... tank size i would say could affect growth.. over crowding means more competition for food... are all of your rays eating the same amount of food???

well,, definitely the larger pearls eat more than the leos, but the leos do get enough food than they can eat. I think I need to do more water changes, I do 50% once every two weeks.

I had my female by herslef for about a half a year..... VERY little growth at all. She's now in with 3 other rays.... Seems to almost be growing before my eyes. I think competition for food is a huge factor.

Nic, what kind of pellets do u use ?? mine just don't seem interested in the pellets
i feed hikari pellets... sinking cichlid, carnivore and massivore..

Yeah like said above Perfect water quality and a varied constant diet is best but a whole bunch of rays in the same circumstances can grow differently. I think water being extremely important. My true flower which I have had for over a year now was in his tank with few fish and I fed everyday but with less water changes. Took a year to grow from 6 to about 9". Now I have a lot of fish and do a water change at least everyday sometimes twice and feed only once every 3 days and it has grown from 9 to about 11-12" with less feeding but better water quality. Certain rays are different too. I think motoros and black rays will grow faster than tigers and flowers and Castexi will grow the fastest IMO.

i do waterchanges 3 times a week on my rays. 50 % each time. thats all my young fish. they done studies about that. theve taken a group of fish and put them in a 125, and then the other half of the same batch in the 20 long. 100 percent water change on the 20 and once a month on the 125. same diet and the ones in the 20 grew 3 times as big in a 6 month period i think.
