i know the tank needs to be well planted but i only have a few live plants at the moment and my female is about to pop! what makes the fry more safe? most coverage at the top of the tank or coverage at the bottom of the tank? basically should i make my plants float or should i leave them planted aha.

The fry will usually seek any cover they can after escaping the first lunge from an adult. That said, they do typically go upward first so you might have more fry survive if you leave them floating.

the best thing is to seperate, my wife is a pro guppy breeder. alot of java moss or other plants can help if you cant seperate. with all of my wife's fry they always go to the bottom and even hide in the gravel. some mothers do not eat their fry so you may get lucky. but if you do have a mother that eats her fry sometimes nothing helps because some eat them as fast as they can pop them out. she has had a few like that and she just would scoop the babies out with a small net and put them in a drop tank. All you need in a drop tank is to make sure the temp is above 72F and a sponge filter. if you do not have a filter just do daily 30% water changes. hope this was of some help and good luck. Also the males will eat the fry as well!

Thanks alot guy! i only bought 2 pregnant females lol so im currently male-less. figured if they can hold sperm for 3 more spawns the chance for me getting a male from my previous batch increases greatly ! also the males won't harass my females to death,Again! so 2 females in a 20G well planted? i think the survial rate should be 70% or over from the answers i got. no java moss or tall grass yet i'll try to get some before new years. @armyguy24523 what does she use them for? should i use male or females guppies for my Jag and midas? (cichlids) . are they the same health wise?

Thanks again for all the positive feed back!

well actually she breeds to sell, she has some show guppies that bring about 50 bucks for a trio, so with the 60-70 fry she makes out pretty good, but of course she gets fry that will be deformed or not up to par so she gives them to me and my red tail cat gets them. but to answer your question is does not matter what sex you feed but in your case i would feed males so you will have more females to breed, remember 1 male for every 3-4 females, and just because the female can hold sperm for 3 spawns does not mean it will happen, we have not had luck with that, so my advice would be to go to a lfs and get a male, males are alot easier to find and they are only a buck or so. or if you want my wife has some males she can sell you so that way you can have food for your fish and make a little profit at the same time. just go to aquabid and you will see what some go for, they have a pair going for over a hundred, thats the new see thru guppy. best of luck

wow wats your wifes set up? how long did it take her to get a high quality spawn? im smelling money haha i found that guppies usually sink once their born and then they eventually follow the light and head for the top so a good mix of plants every where is honestly the best bet. about feeding time, females should be more healthy for your fish, particularly the prego ones
