Most Personable Cichlid

Convict or rainbow. I have both and are very entertaining, inquisitive, and overall intelligent. The convict definitely recognizes me and has a Napoleon complex.
I agree on those too but I'll add firemouth's aswell though some reach 7+ inches over the years but most will probably stay under 6 inches. I'm growing out a pink convict pair and I'd say the male is similar in aggression and personality of amphilophus males just in smaller size.

I’ve always wanted to try firemouths. I had one for about a week before it got harassed to death by a convict.

Other good options are electric jacks or smaller acaras. All the fun of a regular jack or a gt, respectively, but in a smaller, more peaceful package.

For me it's Rams. Dwarf cichlid that thinks it's a tank buster. Wild caught ones have always been a favorite of mine. They flair at each other, charge the glass and the run as fast as possible back to their cave or upturned flower pot. Never had a case of Ram on Ram violence and you can keep multiples in a 3 or 4 foot tank.

There are many in the Amatitlania family that would fit the bill. You could deviate from norms and get some of the less seen varieties like Amatitlania myrnae, sajica, or
septemfasciata.
Look at Trichromis salvini. Males should get to the 6in mark.

What size tank are these going into?

55g

I would go with a smaller species then, so what space is available feels bigger. Like HRPs or Nanolutae.

I had a pair of HRPs in a 55 for about a year. They lived with Tetras, platys, plecos. Spawned every three weeks like clockwork, the tank consumed the fry, only had 3 individuals of 10 spawns make it.
